Should I Be Home During Roof Replacement?

During roof replacement staying home is completely optional. Most roofers ask for access to electricity. This can be an outside outlet or an extension cord from inside the home. Roof replacements often occur on homes without anyone home. Sometimes the noise can play a factor in comfort level. It is a general understanding that children should not be anywhere near the roofing equipment or even in the yard. Debris will fall from the roof as the roofer’s work.

Roof replacement can be a messy job. Between the shingles being removed from the roof to the unbelievable amount of dust created during the “rip” of the old roof. There is no way around it. Roofing is messy. When thinking about debris falling from the roof bare in mind safety of course, but also any garden beds and pots which may be placed close to the home. As a roofer, we always do everything in our power to not get shingles in the flowers but unfortunately this does sometimes happen. Always take the precaution of moving what you can in order to best protect things. For some, during roof replacement, a comfort is found in being home.

As mentioned earlier, roof replacement can be very dusty. The scope of the roof work really depends on the number of layers of shingles, if wood shingles are present, and if the roof decking is reusable. When the roof decking is not re—usable, this means that the barrier between the inside of the attic and the sky needs to be replaced. When installing plywood on a roof, it is usually pretty smooth. The number of valleys and number of facets to the roof are the biggest factors of complexity. If the roof is not complex, it may be surprising how fast the roofers can get such hard work done so fast.

Having the understanding of the vulnerability your home becomes during roof replacement, now think about the dust that can be generated. This amount of dust can be troublesome to individuals with even the strongest allergy defense. Roofing is a dirty job. Its quite amazing to watch roofing pros replace a roof. So, you decide. Will you watch the fun and face the noise and dust of roof replacement or will you go out for a day on the town?
